The copyright notice needs to refer to a legal moral person, so indeed you
should avoid using a nickname there.
About COPYING: sorry for the mistake, this is something we often tell GPL'd
projects about. But your project is BSD'd :)
So, since you already include a complete version of the license in each file,
this is not necessary to add it in a COPYING file - though this would be a
good idea for clarity.
