I don't know how it works internally. It has a well-documented API for
managing it tasks and, as far as I can tell, delegates the actual downloading
to one of its backends – in the case of bittorrent that would the
"transmission" daemon.
Unfortunately while the API is public, DownloadStation itself is not free
software.
