Comment(by mrpingouin):
I don't think I like the idea of just changing the order of decoders. For
example, suppose we distinguish safe and unsafe decoders, and first try
safe ones without worrying about the order (because they don't take what's
not for them) after trying the unsafe ones (MP3, AAC) in a user-specified
order (with a good default value). As soon as we have two unsafe decoders,
one is going to take everything and the other will never be used. So the
new device doesn't help at all.
So I'm leaning to change the detection scheme. For example, we could rely
on ocaml-magic, which would become mandatory, at least for use inside
unsafe decoders. This would also be faster than instantiating decoders
just to check decodability, which is part of the surprisingly high load
that we have on new tracks.
I'm wondering if the mime-based approach would work cleanly, and what
other tools (mplayer) do.
Another question is: does the AAC decoder still accept more than AAC
files? If only MP3 is unsafe in practice, it works to adopt an ugly
solution with a special case for MP3...
