#350: Register new settings in the script language?

 I can think of easy ways to do that, but I'm slightly unsatisfied with
 settings in general, so I'm not keen to build more on top of them for now.
 (Also, there is the alternative of using references.)

 For example, when using set() on an undefined key, we only issue a warning
 in the logs (it's silent if logs don't start), but we crash when using
 set() with a value of incorrect type. A typo is easily done, and cannot be
 detected early because settings are strings: crashing could be
 frustrating, but not crashing hides the typo.

 How about delaying this ticket until 1.0?
