Ladies and gentlemen,
I'm proud to announce that Liquidsoap has won yesterday the first prize
at the [EMAIL PROTECTED] Innovation Award. This was the first edition of this
open-source software contest, organized by the ENS Cachan, a french
school. It was rather small, and our victory not so glorious, since
there were as many projects as prizes -- three. But that's still nice,
and I'm glad to have been there. I hope that the event will happen again
next years, to help promote innovating open-source software.
Besides glory, it also means 700€ for the team. We should discuss how to
use that money. There are two options: having fun or getting a server.
I'm more and more thinking that the first option would be best. All
Savonet developpers could meet for a good diner. I'm also thinking about
inviting all Savonet-friendly people for a couple drinks after that.
I'll keep you (and our website) updated about new material from the
organizers of the contest. I'm notably expecting a video of my
presentation. And of course I'll keep you updated about any fun event.
Long life to open-source, innovative software, and Savonet !
Cheers,
--
David
PS (for devs): Other options than getting a server or having fun can of
course be proposed. Concerning the server, it might be useful but here's
why I'm not so convinced. With 700€ we'd get a server for about two
years. We might get extra money in the meantime, from other prizes, or
donations. But that's not granted, which could eventually mean paying
the server from our pocket(s). Another server also implies extra
administration work. Currently, we rely on Romain's personal server for
our trac (and dolebrai.net): he's paying it alone, and he does almost
all of the maintainance. That means that his advice will be important
here. I'm also thinking of giving him some of the prize's money for the
server's fee. And the best reason for not liking the server option is
that the fun option sounds great :)
