I've been reading more about this ultravox protocol. Unfortunately,
its implementation will never happen in Liquidsoap and here is why:
"6.1 Patent License
25 America Online believes it may have certain patent rights that
would be applicable to any
26 fully compliant implementation of this Specification. In order to
encourage the free and
27 unrestricted development of implementations compliant with this
Specification, America
28 Online agrees to provide you with the following Patent License."

This is an extract taken from this document:

http://hackipedia.org/Protocols/Internet/HTTP/pdf,%20shoutcast/Ultravox%203.0%20protocol%20spec.pdf.raw-conversion.utf-8.txt

Apparently, AOL is only interested in commercial streaming business.
Although I have nothing against running a streaming business,
liquidsoap and savonet are open source projects and, as such, we do
not wish to engage any financial responsibility in the work that we
are doing.

Specifications for the ultravox protocol have apparently been around
since at least 2004 but there does not seem to exist a single
open-source implementation available, which further indicates that its
implementation in non-commercial software is not recommended and/or
possible.

Even if savonet/liquidsoap developpers were to be given a specific
license to implement the protocol, and even if that license was also
made available to our users, we would not implement the protocol
unless the license would also grant the right to modify and
redistribute the protocol or a modified version, which is one of the
fundamental rights that has made our work and other's possible in
open-source software.

Finally, I'd say that this is honestly a shame for AOL, in particular
after the VLC yellow page fiasco. The protocol, to my opinion, is
quite interesting and could have a good potential for success.
However, AOL's obliviousness make it impossible for it to succeed.

Personally, I totally understand that shoutcast's yellow pages provide
a widely available list of radios. Unfortunately, I think that for us
this is a big NO-NO. However, we are working on the Flows project,
which we hope could bring something new as a listing service for
web-radios.
