I'm not surprised to hear about crashes and lockups while using 
qjackctl. I haven't experienced that, but I *have* noticed that jackd 
has fewer xruns when NOT using qjackctl. I plan on looking into all the 
command line options and alternative GUIs and documenting them on my 
pro-audio for Gentoo page. Anyway, qjackctl usually writes to 
~/.jackdmp. You can start, when you get to that point, by looking at 
that file and executing jackd with those options manually.
