I've actually been trying to do that and thus far the only one I got to install successfully was lame through liblamemp3-dev. I do have a pkg-config installed on debian. I dunno what the original poster is running, but yeah. I'm too used to apt-get I guess along with the rest of us who hate building stuff. *smiles*
