Thanks Lars for these explanations. Additionally, opam can tell you which
packages to install, simply do:

opam install depext
opam depext taglib mad lame vorbis cry liquidsoap

This should for instance give you the list of packages to install to
compile and install liquidsoap with mp3 and vorbis decoding/encoding.

In debian and debian-derivatives, most external dependencies should be
available as binary packages. This is also true for OSX I believe.
