SEEKING FIELD RESEARCH ASSISTANT FOR AVIAN ECOLOGY FIELD WORK
One field research assistant is needed for a three-month field research in
avian community ecology and landscape ecology in the lowland tropical
rainforest of Sumatra, from late May until late August, 2008. The assistant
will aid effectively in the research activities and other necessary tasks of
the field team. Please see below for details.
Project description:
The field site is in the Harapan Forest on the border between Jambi and South
Sumatra Provinces, which is a disturbed lowland forest under the joint
management of Burung Indonesia, RSPB and BirdLife International (for further
information of the site, please see:
http://www.birdlife .org/action/ ground/sumatra/ index.html).
The field season will involve extensive surveys of avian community structure
in different habitat types, and preliminary studies on the movement behavior
of some focal species. More specific tasks include avian observational survey,
mist-net banding, vegetation structure survey, and behavior observation of
focal individuals, in an array of habitat types.
The field season will last from around May 24th until August 22nd. The
assistant is expected to cover at least the first two months, although
coverage of the entire duration is preferred.
Expected responsibilities of the assistant:
-Act as an interpreter of English and Bahasa Indonesia, and aid effectively in
the communications with local people and on-site management authorities.
-Assist in the setting up of mist-nets in each of our survey locations.
-Assist in vegetation structure surveys following an established survey
protocol.
-Assist in the preliminary movement study of focal bird species through
orchestrated efforts with the field team (details to be provided later).
-Participate actively in the efforts of the field team in logistic necessities
and other field tasks.
Payment:
In addition to paid travel fare, dining and lodging, reasonable payment to the
field assistant is available depending on his / her experience and
qualifications. (Health insurance and other insurance will be the sole
responsibility of the field assistant.)
Expected qualifications of the field assistant:
Good English communication capabilities:
It is essential that the recruited field assistant be able to effectively
communicate in Bahasa Indonesia and English (or, although less likely,
Mandarin).
Ability to carry out intense field work and willingness to withstand harsh
field conditions:
The majority of our work will be carried out deep into the forest, thus will
involve considerable physical hardships. It is extremely important that the
assistant be prepared to withstand the demanding field condition and maintain
enthusiasm and a high spirit, and be able to undertake field tasks
effectively. Although not strictly required, some previous field experiences
would be an asset.
Good understanding of basic ecological knowledge:
Candidates that have received some formal theoretical and / or hands-on
training in biology / ecology are preferred, but those with other experiences
that helped build a relevant knowledge base are also
encouraged.
Other considerations that are not required but would be preferable:
-Expertise / knowledge in plants, especially plants in lowland Sumatran
rainforests:A field assistant with knowledge in plants is highly desired.
-Expertise / knowledge in birds:The field assistant is welcome to carry out
formal bird surveys and participate in mist-net banding after some training,
if he / she would like to. The fact that the field assistant is a bird person
(to whatever level) could enhance the productivity of the field work
considerably. The field work would also be more fun and of greater meaning to
the assistant if he / she is interested in the general topic, or even plans to
pursue a related career.
-Previous field experiences:As mentioned above.
-Senior college students in ecology / biology seeking field research
opportunities to fulfill thesis requirements:This is again a reciprocal
situation – senior students tend to be better qualified for field research,
and carrying out some original scientific hypothesis testing in a highly
endangered and important ecosystem provides in itself an excellent opportunity
for fulfilling thesis research requirements. In addition to assisting in the
existing research project, the field assistant will be encouraged and helped
to pursue some degree of independence and self-command in the field work, to
ask scientific questions that he / she is interested in, and to get full
exposure and training in the research process.
-Female field assistants:Female field assistant candidates are especially
encouraged to apply.
Use of research results for thesis writing (if applicable):
If the field assistant has helped substantially in field data collection, part
of the research results will be shared for the student to use in his / her
thesis. On the other hand, the assistant is also encouraged to assume some
level of independence during the course of field research, and actively pursue
questions that are of their own interest. Given active thinking and arduous
field efforts, a good thesis will conceivably be a natural product.
Application procedures:
If you are interested in this field work opportunity, please send in an
electronic copy of your CV to Ms. Fangyuan Hua at: [EMAIL PROTECTED], together
with the contact information of at least two references. The deadline for
application is May 20th, 2008, but the position will be filled as soon as
suitable candidate appears. Please feel free to email with any questions.
Thanks for your time in reading through all this.
Sincerely,
Fangyuan Hua
