sticking my nose out here...

the research I have done on the different breeds has shown a lot about
each other. I had the pleasure of talking to a man who worked for the
Royal Saudi family about Saluki (he saw Sakeri and wanted to meet him).
Very little is known about the Saluki, Sloughi, Azawakh, Afghan, and
Tazi- why? Because of the Islamic religion. I asked him about the other
breeds, he was astonished that an American had heard of them. The Saluki
over there are carefully bred to other Saluki, just as the Sloughi's are
to Sloughi's, and so forth. The Tazi is closer related to the Thaighan
(the Afghan Hound from Thailand) than the Saluki. There is also a breed
of "Borzoi" from the area of Russia/China that looks much like a cross
between a Chortaj (Russian shorthaired Borzoi), Tazi, and Saluki.

Yes, the Saluki is varied from reagion to reagion, just as the Borzoi
is- from the Christophivoy to the Psovaya to the Siberian (and a few
other types). Some were bred more for open terrian, others for
mountainous regions, and some strictly for larger game (Siberian
Wolfhounds were bred to hunt the Siberian tiger).

It is very facinating to learn more about the various breeds and
histories, yes, but as I have found...

Unless you actually LIVED THERE and were THERE in THAT TIME, you will
never know the exact truth about our wonderful hounds. I don't belive
that the Greyhound was on the tombs in Egypt (more like a Saluki,
Pharoah, Basenji... not that perticular breed but of that TYPE). WHo's
to say what other breeds have become extinct (like the Russian
Boar-hound which helped create the Borzoi). I don't belive that the
Greyhound is the oldest breed either- only because of the introduction
of the terrier blood in them in the 1500's. I think the Chart Polski is
the 'true' "Greyhound" as the Greyhound was BEFORE the introduction of
the terrier blood.

Now that is ONE person's translation into thier own personal research.
