I used to let Ears run a limited course, she loved it so much, and she managed fine with that. I also liked the manual rigs better for control, but some of us were hard pressed to keep up with the faster hounds ... and as I have found, one does have to worry more about the 'houndmaster' malfunctioning where a hand rig is concerned.
