LOL -- I was caught in a generalization. My point would have best been made
-- when is the last time you saw a lovely thick coursing smooth "plain"
desert-like Saluki win an American (or even British) event of note? Sringinar
breeds to show -- yes, lovely, but they breed to show. My Springmeadow bitch
is actually part Sringinar, but old time when they looked more like the
Windswifts they were formed from. I did meet a gal who owns a parti Sringinar
who
looks much more traditional like their old stock, but even she was a bit
molded for my taste. You got my point about the feathered creams though --
when
the AKC runs a spread and shows almost nothing but feathered creams with
non-muscled Hollywood bodies (with the exception of a lovely gold-grizzle who
looks a lot like my Anoush), the point has been made. Luckily, we have some
SCOA folks in the DB group too. I think that will make a difference. Though
SCOA and the AKC are far too steeped in folks who have been in Saluki for over
30 years. Change is hard to come by. Westminster did choose a decidedly
larger male than usual this year, but change is slow -- and he was a creamy
feather. God forbid we give precedence to a stocky silver grizzle smooth
hunting
Saluki ... Gail Goodman's Saluqi: Coursing Hounds of the East has some great
pictorial examples of what I am talking about. I don't think there's
anything wrong with the American standard, but it's not the DB standard, IMO.
I've
been in this mix a while, though, and I am partial to a clearly
non-typically American standard. My Springmeadow/Windswift/Sringinar is my
delicate
British bitch, and my DB is my sturdy hunting bitch. Though neither are the
thickly muscled dogs of some of my friends. And neither of them are
traditionally American.

We'll see how they do tomorrow!!!

As for the Rescue, I am always clear to point out how important it is to
adopt when you can. My DB is a rescue of a sort from Saudi -- the Bedouin are
moving to the cities and leaving their dogs with American ex-pats who they
know will take care of the pups. But the Americans live in uncertain times.
So
there is a high need to adopt out of country. It is clear there are more
dogs -- and children -- in need of help than people who can help. Or are able
to help, so I agree with your statement that each person who helps save a
life is a treasure. Though the logical conclusion is that a rescue dog put
into
a home that cannot care for it properly is not being saved. The fine line
is what I think we need dance.

Why Not To Buy A Saluki-
"Cream and feathered Saluki typical of the American Show Saluki"....
Hmmm... so I guess that is the color you would call my American show
Saluki... I need to write AKC and change it from black and tan to
cream... ;-) Last years SCOA Nationals was won by the black and tan
drop dead georgeous beauty Srinigar Azawarhi, who is singally the most
georgous female Saluki I have ever had the privilage of watching. I did
help import a pair of feathered creamies, both from the Al Khabara
Kennel in Estonia, which is also well known for thier Afghan Hounds.
Cream is merely a fad in the current show ring. It seems year before
last was "black eared reds", so who knows about next year. I think after
Alabaster Treasure, everyone wanted a feathered cream.

I agree, the public would benefit from the knowledge of the right dog
for them. I know for a fact you can not just "go out and buy a Saluki",
and unfortunatly there are Greyhound groups that if you have money, you
can have a Greyhound, but if one person can make the difference and help
educate that one adopter/buyer, they can make the right decision and one
less "wrong hound" can find the right home.
