I found an interesting web site about the history of dog (plus goats
and sheep) treadmills. It covers from the 16th century to the 19th
century.

The 1576 book titled "Of English Dogs" by Johannes Caius mentions using
dogs to power turn spits and to draw water out of wells, which makes
this article interesting to read.
