There is a new installer "in the works" in the sense that I've been
going through a little comedy of errors trying to get it together (I
forgot to download the source for the package from the fellow who put
it together for us, he already took it off his site, he put it back up
but the disk image was corrupted...), but hopefully we can get that
straightened out real soon now.

In the meantime, you might consider trying a source install of the
current version. See
http://www.schooltool.org/documentation/developer-references/setting-up-a-development-environment/mac-os-x

Regarding performance on Mac OS X vs. Linux... SchoolTool seems to run
more slowly on Mac OS X. The test suite seems to take noticably
longer, although I've done nothing approaching an apples to apples
comparison. Some Python developers contend that Python runs much more
slowly on Macs due to characteristics of the HFS+ filesystem, but it
is all rather inconclusive (see
http://www.gocept.com/Members/zagy/HFS-vs-UFS for example).

Also, regarding dual processor machines. I just wrote up a quick FAQ
on Python & multi-processor boxes:
http://www.schooltool.org/documentation/faq/multiple-processors I
found this out the hard way after buying a shiny new Dell dual
processor server to run Zope at my old school.

Anyhow, it should run fine on a G4. If you're dedicating a box to
running SchoolTool (x86 or PPC), and you aren't actively of afraid or
repelled by Linux, your best bet is probably installing Ubuntu
(http://ubuntulinux.org) or Edubuntu (http://edubuntu.org), as that is
the platform that our developers use and which receives most of our
(volunteer) packaging attention.
