Actually, whether or not the school periods are used in the calendar
is user configurable.  If you click on "Change Preferences" you'll see
a "Show periods" checkbox.

In the most common case, when a school has one main timetable that is
used throughout, there is a clear benefit.  A teacher can click on a
period to create an event for a class without manually entering the
start and end times for the period.  This may be less of an issue in
European schools, which I gather tend to organize their schedules
around the natural beginning and ending of hours or at least half or
quarter hours.  Many US schools have very random seeming bounaries for
periods, like "10:04 - 10:57" which means that entering those times
manually would be a big pain and error prone.
