I'm not sure about how CB actually does it but I noticed that they write 
a certain ini-file for each PGN they touch. I admit, that I do not 
really like all those files cluttering around.

Probably this would be the only way to go: import it write some index 
file which is used for the preview. Similarly for the real databases. 
(Or is the header info stored there in some index table that could 
probably be accessed for the "preview"?)

Equally helpful, but not at all easy to do would be a search across 
several DBs and collecting the results in one games list. This would 
IMHO require almost the same infrastructure.
