Usually, I use Fritz 8 in Wine for this. (However, I just got an issue
of CB magazine for free which I was not able to load in Fritz; I'll have
to check out what's going on there.) There is no other way as to use
some CB product as they use a proprietary, undocumented format. You'd
have to hack it.

Note: according to my tests, Fritz8 is the last one that runs easily in
Wine. Later versions caused trouble here.

Note2: you might get it for an apple and an egg somewhere on ebay or
whatever. I think I payed some 5 eur for this converter. Quite expensive
IMHO but at the moment the only way.

Note3: I wrote up what I had to do in Debian Sarge while ago in some
detail here http://www.stellarcom.org/arwagner/chess/chessbase.html

You're lost with that. CB's ChessMedia stuff internally relies on pretty
bad technology that will never ever be portable at all. (Unless M$
opensources Windows Media, to be expected right after the freezing of
hell. ;)

For what it's worth, this is the business model of CB these days. They
produce the stuff in a proprietary format that only their programs can
read, therefore you're forced to buy their programs. Actually, I feel
that it wouldn't even be easy for CB themselves to port any of their
stuff to another platform than windows due to some underlying designs.
But why should they? As long as people buy their stuff, there's no need.
And is there any competitor in sight? (If you look at the whole offer.
Sicd is a nice database but we can not deliver the stuff discussed here.)

BTW: just to mention that Scid has a similar problem as soon as it comes
to more than PGN header and move record. How would I transfer e.g. the
flags form Scid to CB... Not that I want to, but well.
