There is a posting on talkchess where Jimmy Mardell reported his findings on
the CBH internal format at
http://talkchess.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=29468&highlight=cbh

On the legality of this, I have confirmed (my post is on that forum as well),
thatindeed it does appear ok to reverse engineer
binary formats for interoperability purposes under both the DMCA and EU
software laws. The purpose here is to use the internals of the format to load
databases in scid (not to hack the chessbase program).

Anyway, the format provided should be enough to try to implement it in scid.
Though, the issue as Jimmy notes is that there is quite a bit of encryption.

Not really. In the latest CB light they have removed the ability to write files
in any format, including PGN. Even before that, size was a problem, with CB
light only allowing 8000 games. Furthermore, CB light PGN export (when it was
still available) would not export all information in a database, especially
problematic if you have book style databases (of which my coach probably have
hundreds)

This is probably a big hurdle for people switching to SCID or other oss
database programs. I have several friends who are coaches, and have collected
material over many years. Also, many sites distribute material in CB format.
There is simply no reliable/simple way to get that information into PGN or SCID
format (that I know of).
