The latter is indeed sometimes helpful, still Scid should at one time 
not get confused if one doesn't do it.

This is actually, from a pure technical point, the more difficult thing 
with handling ZIP. pgn.gz you've just one file and in gz. Relying on 
extensions is not very smart, but at least it seems to work in chess 
most of the time. But you could have more than one PGN in a ZIP and you 
could also have them cluttered across several dirs within that file and 
finally you could have some worst case stuff like:

a/b/c.pgn
c/d/c.pgn
d/c.pgn

where you'd have to concat the files before import. So ZIP is not that 
simple as pgn.gz, I fear. Thus it would be better to add native ZIP 
support which could handle this and might be possible with usage of zlib 
as Ben already pointed out in a former mail.
