I do not think this is needed. At startup, the scid script checks where 
on earth it sits and assumes
the external stuff at the same place. It does not use the PATH at all.
So the trick is to invoke (either explicitly or implicitly via $PATH) 
the scid script you want.

Your approach works of course, but makes it harder to run the installed 
scid version from within your sandbox.
