Hello,

I hope you all had a great summer ! My vacations were a bit longer than
expected. Poor me.

Back to the documentation business. A while ago, there seems to be the need
to have a sample database for the documentation, especially the tutorials.
Nothing better could be found than the collection of games from the Zürich
1953 tournament. Unoriginal, but a great place to start : if only I had
knew that younger...

A surprisingly good version of the data set could be found in the old
Pittsburgh PGN archives. I converted it to Scid's format and zipped it.
Here they are :

 http://benbonben.bingodisk.com/bingo/public/scid/down/zurich1953.pgn

Please note that these links may only be temporary. The service might be
slow.

Here are some questions :

1. At first, I thought about giving the database in Scid's format. But it
might be interesting to give the PGN version too, since it might help to
show how to convert a PGN database.

2. If that's right, we might want to add some information to it regarding
its archival status, like we would do with Centriscid or something. And if
we need to maintain multiple database version, we should adopt a naming
convention that would be more appropriate than the one suggested above.
This is not that important for that file, since it's an example, but if we
want a consistent naming scheme, that would be nice to start properly.

3. How are these database examples to be maintained ? They could stand into
the SF site, or site somewhere else. In the SF site, they could be included
into Scid's bundle, or just sit next to the other resources the site
provide, like the database of names. If they come with Scid, where do we
put them : in \bases ?

4. Speaking of names, I did not convert them according to the latest
database. So as they stand, they are ambiguous. That's only a matter of
speaking, of course : we all know who the players were. This could be a
topic for the tutorial, in fact : to show how to maintain names. For that
topic, I would like to know how people proceed here, on a personal basis.

Lots of questions for a little database !

I wish you all an autumn full of colors,

Warmest regards, while it lasts,

Benoit
