Please check if you have a dvi file in ~/.scid/log. You should have some 
  TempOpeningReport.dvi and along with that a TempOpeningReport.ps. 
Right? Then all is well. I think we can rule out a bug in TeX setup. On 
Ubuntu they surely use the same setup as on Debian and there TeX works 
like a charme (personally I use the TeXLive flavour).

But: you're right, there is a bug in Scid: The viewer for the PS file is 
hardwired and unfortunately to ghostview which does not exist on Linux. 
These days. I'll see if I can find a portable solution to that one.

(Admitting that I never used View Latex but only store the file 
somewhere and compile it myself.)
