The rationale is to search for commands near the place where you will
see its results.
"autoplay", "rotate board", etc -> board menu
"search games", "copy games" -> gamelist menu
...etc...

I wonder if the problem of the board menu is that it is not clear that
the icons represent sub-menus.
For example when hovering the mouse on the menu "file" it would be weird
to wait for a tooltip to appear: it is simpler to click the menu to see
what are its commands.
But if a user thinks that the board icons are actual commands it will
not click themwithout knowing the possible effects.
Can this be the problem?

It should work as the mainmenu:
- Do notdisappear if the mouse leaves the menu
- Disappear if there is a click anywhere else off the menu (the board
for example)

Scid GUI is written in tcl/tkso anyone who wants to write a version for
android or iOS will be obliged to rewrite it from scratch.
Nowadays there are a lot oflaptops with a touch screen (and sometimes
detachable keyboardtoo); I think it is useful if Scid can be used for
basic things with just a touch interface, for example to set a position
and analyzing the variants with a group of other people.
Obviously 99% of Scid users (including me) will continue to use it with
a mouse and a keyboard; so this must be done without harming the
usability of the mouse+keyboard combinationand there are no plans to
remove any functions like the tooltips.
For the board I needed a permanent status bar of at least two rows: the
large icons of the menu do not take up additional space.

About your other email.
I thought pgnscid was too dangerous.
Importing pgn files can be slow and if the process was interrupted with
ctrl+c or closing the terminal window the si4 database would be damaged.
Please try using the GUI to import multiple pgn files and let me know if
the script was useful for other use cases.

I cannot reproduce the opening report error (the message is about the
progress bar: do you see the pop up window with the 2 progress bars?).
I wonder whether it may be a bug that only appears with certain
database, can you try if this works:
