1. Online Courses through Montana State University

The National Teachers Enhancement Network (NTEN) is designed for
secondary science teachers, providing quality courses to enhance knowledge
and teaching skills. Participants establish working relationships with
science faculty and peers on a national level. Course fees include tuition
and materials. Montana State University has accreditation from Northwest
Association of Schools and Colleges, and courses can lead to a Master of
Science in Science Education Degree!

2. Swinburne Astronomy Online
http://www.swin.edu.au/astronomy/sao/

Applications/Re-enrolments are now open for Semester 1, 2001 - follow
the "How to Apply" link from our website. Applications will close on
Monday 29 January 2001; teaching will commence on 5 March and
finish on 16 June.

In Semester 1, 2001 the following units will be available:
HET602 Exploring the Solar System
HET603 Exploring Stars & the Milky Way
HET604 Exploring Galaxies and the Cosmos (prerequisite HET603)
HET605 Theories of Space and Time (prerequisite HET604)
HET607 History of Astronomy
HET609 Astrophotography & CCD Imaging (prerequisite HET603)
HET610 Studies in Space Exploration (prerequisite HET602)

For details on all our units, follow the "Units" link from our
website. Information on Fees and Entry Requirements for our Master of
Science in Astronomy, Graduate Diploma of Science in Astronomy,
Graduate Certificate of Science in Astronomy and Individual Unit
enrolment is also available from our website.

Last semester 165 people from approx. 28 countries studied with us,
and we expect our numbers to grow significantly this semester as 'the
word gets around', so please apply early. Places in Swinburne
Astronomy Online units are not confirmed until payment is received and
cleared, and as some classes can fill early we suggest that you apply
and pay as early as possible. Class sizes are restricted to approx.
30 max. per instructor, and our unit instructors are all professional
astronomers.

We are looking forward to another great semester, with two exciting
new units (HET609 and HET610) and lots to study and discuss about
contemporary astronomy. We hope that you can join us,
Cheers

4. Penn State Summer Workshops for Science Teachers
(open to teachers from all states)

Science teachers can register now for five summer workshops on the Penn
State University Park campus during the summer of 2001. The Science
Teacher Workshops offer middle-school and high-school teachers from across
the country the opportunity to experience some of the most exciting fields
of science--astronomy, astrobiology, biotechnology, and physics--with
senior faculty known for their excellence in both teaching and research.
Teachers will participate in hands-on activities, meet with scientists and
researchers, and tour various labs and research sites. Participants will
receive two graduate credits from Penn State for each workshop. Room,
board, and a travel allowance are provided. Scholarships will be available
for the astronomy workshops.

The workshops include:

Astrobiology: The Origin and Early Evolution of Life (June 18-22, 2001)

The Mechanics of Materials: Advanced Technologies and Fundamental Science
(June 25-29, 2001)

Biotechnology: From Laboratory to Classroom, An Action Potential Teachers
Program (July 9-13, 2001)

Stars and Planets for Science Teachers (July 9-13, 2001)

Galaxies and Cosmology for Science Teachers (July 16-20, 2001)

Information regarding the workshops and a downloadable application are
available at: http://www.outreach.psu.edu/C&I/Science4Teachers/
