'Science Guy' Touts Education Funds The Associated Press Saturday, December 9, 2000; 3:14 PM PHOENIX It took the bow-tied host of a children's program to point out the sad-but-true state of math and science education in the United States. Bill Nye, better known as "The Science Guy," kicked off the three-day conference of the National Science Teachers Association Thursday by decrying the lack of money and attention given to science education. The conference comes on the heels of the release of the Third International Science Math Study that ranks U.S. eighth-grade students 17th in the world in science and math knowledge. "If the U.S. was ranked 17th in the world in track and field or in Olympic swimming, there would be a tremendous outcry," said the Emmy-winning TV personality. "Imagine the money that would be spent to fix that." "Maybe we shouldn't make students take science tests anymore. We'll just let the Florida Supreme Court decide their scores," he said. 2000 The Associated Press ---------------------------------------------------- This is the CPS Science Teacher List.
