Over the last ten years we have developed a program that teams scientists
with
teachers and inspires curricula for local communities. We are spreading
the word about our workshop and scholarship opportunity to K-12 educators.
 Here is a brief announcement:

SCHOLARSHIP AND WORKSHOP PROVIDE CORNERSTONE IN TEACHER LEADER DEVELOPMENT

Enter a $1000 workshop scholarship drawing. Unique, active, and fun!
The AMAZON Rainforest Workshop July 5-13, 2001 is a professional
development
opportunity for teachers to work side-by-side with scientists in one of
the most biologically diverse environments in the world.
* Join author/illustrator Lynne Cherry and a spirited faculty of specialists
in ornithology, botany, marine biology, and entomology.
* Integrate field study with slides and support materials as a catalyst
for local environmental education projects at home.
* Receive academic credit.
Full land cost for the workshop is $1898. Budget airfares and optional
Andes extensions are available. Scholarship entry deadline is April 2.

PROGRAM RESULTS
Participants comment that this rainforest workshop is one of their most
memorable lifetime experiences. Often funded by school districts and
civic organizations, workshop participants return home as leaders to
translate
their experience into captivating lessons for their students, workshops
for colleagues, and presentations for their communities. The academic
rigor of this program and interdisciplinary nature of its content bolster
teacher confidence to make comparisons with environmental and geographical
concepts at home.

WORKSHOP FEATURES
* Ascend over 115 feet on a 1/4-mile Rainforest Canopy Walkway, the only
one of its kind in the Western Hemisphere.
* Through slides, handouts, and field-work, investigate rainforest and
local ecosystem connections in a way that inspires creative teaching
methods.
* Use hand lenses, binoculars, headlamps, maps, field guides, water testing
equipment, butterfly nets, penetrometers, and other simple field equipment
as a model of experiential education to improve student motivation and
learning.
* Overnight at three rainforest lodge facilities in the Amazon basin of
Northern Peru.
* Visit local schools and families and see how indigenous cultures use
the forest for medicine, food, and shelter.
* Get involved in conservation and cultural exchange programs through
the ACEER.
