Japanese Students Don't Enjoy Math, Science
Despite high scores on international math and science assessments, many
of Japan's students don't enjoy the subjects. According to a December
survey by the Amsterdam-based International Association for the Evaluation
of Educational Achievement, Japan ranked No. 36 out of 37 in interest in
math and No. 22 of 23 in science. The Education Ministry, concerned by the
survey results, plans to institute a curriculum next year that emphasizes
flexibility and enjoyment.
