Dear Educator,

You are cordially invited to join the Animal-Friendly Labs (AFLabs) biology
curriculum listserve, sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States
(HSUS).

The AFLabs listserve is intended for teachers and others with an interest in
the issues surrounding the use of animals in the classroom, particularly in
the context of high school and college biology labs. Topics to be covered on
the listserve include (but are not restricted to): classroom-based
dissection and live animal experimentation and alternatives to these
procedures; potential difficulties encountered in implementing alternatives
(e.g., conforming to state and local curriculum standards);
multidisciplinary, inquiry-based alternatives to traditional biology
curricula; and the maintenance of animals in the classroom for educational
purposes.

Subscribing and posting to the list is easy (as is unsubscribing).
Interested individuals can join the list by sending a blank email message

The AFLabs listserve is part of a broader effort by The HSUS to encourage a
dialogue about the harmful use of animals in education and to facilitate the
implementation of alternatives to such use of animals. "Alternatives" is
used in a broad sense to encompass methods that could be used effectively to
reduce or refine, as well as replace, harmful animal use. As a complement to
the listserve, The HSUS is developing a website geared primarily towards
life science teachers at the high school and college levels teachers. The
site will provide easily accessible information about available
alternatives to dissection and live-animal experimentation, lesson plans
that incorporate alternatives methods, and product reviews of available
software and Web-based alternatives to dissection and invasive live animal
experiments.

The AFLab website will also include background discussions of the
controversy and divergent ethical views surrounding the use of animals in
the classroom, as well as examples of how non-invasive, inquiry-based
scientific explorations of living organisms are being used in classrooms and
field settings in various parts of the world.
