Modelers, Good news! I just found out that funding for our new summer graduate program for high school physics & physical science teachers is available to partially defray costs of needy, dedicated teachers. Teachers who are funded this summer will probably be supported again next summer at the same level, if they need it. All costs at ASU are among the lowest in the nation. (Remember, our graduate program is designed for lifelong professional development, as called for by the NRC National Standards and the Glenn Commission. It is secondarily a Master's degree program. One of our chief aims is to extend Modeling Instruction to include 20th century physics.) Many of our teachers have been able to double their funds by requesting matching funds from their school. This cost sharing has a further advantage: their school becomes more dedicated to science teaching reform, and the teacher is given opportunities to mentor and teach other science teachers (and sometimes goes to the top of the list for classroom technology!). Our Modeling Instruction Program is the ONLY high school science program designated as EXEMPLARY by the U.S. Department of Education. All graduate courses will be influenced by Modeling Instruction. Your school administration should be pleased to support you, knowing this. Please e-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED], if you're interested. And forward this note to your student teachers and interested colleagues. Cheers, Jane COURSE INFORMATION (see also <http://modeling.asu.edu>) (updated 3/23/01) COURSE SCHEDULE. All courses are 3 semester hours. Prerequisites for contemporary physics courses are 2 semesters of college physics (trig-based), and a course in introductory calculus. You are urged to take PHS 530 after you've taken 1 semester of algebra-based college physics. Instructors for most courses are excellent ASU physics faculty who do outstanding research and who love to teach. Their names are listed here. 1st SESSION (3 weeks: June 11-29. You can take only 1 course.) PHS 530: Methods of Physics Teaching I. Line #68379 (Modeling Workshop in mechanics. 8-3 daily. Peer leaders: Jeff Hengesbach and Sean McKeever) PHS 531: Methods of Physics Teaching II. Line #62514 (Modeling Workshop/2nd sem. 8-3 daily. Peer leader: Larry Dukerich, with 5 expert modelers who will be refining curriculum materials.) PHS 540: Integrated Physics & Chemistry. Line #62400 (1-4 PM daily. Otto Sankey, Andrew Chizmeshya) PHS 570: Spacetime Physics. Line #58376 (10-1 daily. Richard Jacob) 2nd SESSION (5 weeks: July 2-Aug 3. You can take 2 courses + leadership workshop.)
