Patricia Mendoza, regional counsel for the Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund, said at a news conference that the board could be discriminating against Hispanic students, based on recent school construction. Of three new high schools pledged in a 1998 school board resolution, the two slated for non-minority neighborhoods have been built, but the one for Little Village, a predominantly Latino neighborhood, still has no funding, Mendoza said. Chicago Public Schools CEO Paul Vallas said of the group's complaint, which was submitted to the U.S. Justice Department, and its threat to follow up with a lawsuit: "Bring it on.
