I do not have a solution but I hope the following may help in diagnosis trail.

I had a similar problem under RH 9.0  when the desktop (or X) crashed and I had 
to re-log in. It turned out that the available space on my /home partition, as 
detected by fdisk, was incorrect (less than what was expected) and fsck did not 
reveal or correct it problem. 

I can't remember clearly, but it seems manually migrating the /home partition 
to another place, deleting and re-creating the partition (if the partition is 
separate), and copying back the data was the crude solution. (BTW: data was not 
too critical, as the system was only newly installed!)

These errors normally go to tty1 which is f1 that is why I suggested he go 
to f2.
