At the GDM log on screen, look for "sessions" at the bottom.
There is a place to set your default to KDE. I used it to
set mine to Xfce.
Agreed, it can be manually specified after the username is entered,
but it always reverts to Gnome on the next login.
I'll try removing GDM altogether and see if that magically causes KDM
to start.

There is a click-e-do somewhere for one session only or to make
it permanent. You missed it and made it one session only.
