Fedora 17 has 1.4rc5 SRPMs in repo, but they have tons of
dependencies to build.

Have you used "mock"? I find it very handy to set up a local Scientific Linux or
CentOS repository, point mock's yum setup to that, and use it to build RPM's
inside a well organized and easily replaced chroot cage. It's a very, very
useful tool I use for Repoforge tools all the time.
Really, all they need to do is put up F17 in a virtual machine and have done
with it.
