Well where would it come from? I would have chosen an XFCE Live USB
installation if that was available but I'm not certain ...

Try this:

 # yum --disablerepo=* --enablerepo=sl --enablerepo=sl-security update

You might also consider to add --enablerepo=sl-fastbugs.

With this approach, you first disable all repos and will only add the official SL repos. That should hopefully get you through the worst part.

Otherwise, have a look in /etc/yum.repos.d ... and use rpm -qif <repo-file> to see where this file came from. If it's something you've added manually, you won't find a match. Otherwise, it's usually coming from a package somewhere.

My experience is that rpmforge/rpmfusion and elrepo repositories often cause conflicts, so if I need them I have them disabled by default. This might be because I'm often depending on the EPEL repository too. YMMV.
