Something sorta like that, but each different body has a different set of
quirks and personality traits. The First Doctor, William Hartnell, was already
in his sixties when he took the role, so his Doctor was an irascible old man
(D'OH!). Patrick Troughton, who took over for him, was sort of a clownish type,
exactly the opposite of Hartnell. Jon Pertwee, the Third Doctor, was sort of a
dandified guy, right down to his silk-lined velvet smoking cape-jacket, and he
had a penchant for technology and gourmet food. Tom Baker, probably the first
Doctor anyone in the States saw, brought what most have termed "true alienness"
to the role. While friendly and outgoing, he also carried that aura of menace,
the palpability that he was a Lord of Time, not to be trifled with. Peter
Davison, IMO, came off as kind of a school professor-type, always teaching his
companions about things as though it was as simple as child's play, especially
when it wasn't. Colin Baker (no relation to Tom) has the
distinction of being the only Doctor to attack a companion. Even though it was
during a post-regenerative crisis and not his fault, per se, he still caught
all kinds of flack. Probably why he barely lasted two seasons, and didn't get a
regeneration ep. Sylvester McCoy was and will always be my favorite Doctor,
because he was a Chessmaster. For all the wrong reasons, mind you. The Doctor,
in all his incarnations, has always understood that lives would be forfeit in
the course of his efforts to save the Universe. But McCoy's Doctor often took
pains to forfeit those lives, using people as chess pieces without regard,
including his own companions. Paul McGann, IMO, never really had a chance to
establish himself as a specific character. In most Who canons, he's not even
recognized as a Doctor. Several have gone so far as to count Richard E. Grant
(best known as the villain in "Hudson Hawk" to American audiences), who did a
few BBC Radio recordings as the Doctor, ahead of McGann.
Eccleston, I could get to like.

And, no, I'm not much of a fan. Only twenty-seven years viewing...

I guess this won't be a spoiler for anyone, but is each incarnation of
the Doctor supposed to be the same guy in a different body? I read
something to that effect...

Replace him, as usual. Its sort of expected to always have new
Doctors. We're on our ninth one; tenth or eleventh,
if you count the 'Made for TV' and the movie Doctor.
Waiting to see how the new guy does is part of the
fun of the show.:)
