Hi team,

First of all, I need to apologize for not having been responsive in the
discussions concerning the 2012 edition of the GSOC. I am a bit
overcomitted, and the discussions were going well, so I didn't feel that
I could add something terribly useful to them.

The ground-to-earth organization for the GSOC is starting to set up. In
particular, we are planning to participate in the GSOC under the umbrella
of the PSF. I have informal agreement for this. There will be a meeting
at PyCon this weekend about the GSOC. It would be great if those of the
team who are there could drop by.

This year, I think that we can ramp up a bit the participation on our
side. Last year I wasn't sure that our best practices were set enough,
and that we had enough potential mentors to take more than one student.
This year I hope that if we get enough enthusiasm and good
applications, we can apply for more.

On the mentor side, I'd like people to start thinking if they can be
mentors or backup mentors. I won't give names, but I think that we have a
good number of people that have the skills to be mentors. Just keep in
mind if you volunteer to be a mentor that it does take some time. If you
have a good student, it is worth the effort: you will gain a good
collaborator in the long run, in addition to the code contributions that
the project will directly bring to the scikit.

If any potential students is hanging around on the mailing list, it would
be good if they could start thinking of the project they want to submit.
A few ideas have been flying around. Some of them are written down on the
wiki:
https://github.com/scikit-learn/scikit-learn/wiki/A-list-of-topics-for-a-google-summer-of-code-%28gsoc%29-2012
it is editable by everybody and can serve as a way to keep track of
discussions. Students are also free to propose their projects. The
guideline are that the projects should be sizable contributions that they
believe they can bring to success in a summer's work, and that it should
be of general interest to the community. As a reminder, a GSOC is a full
time project. This means that under the rules of the GSOC you cannot have
another job, or a summer project. This does include PhD programs: unless
you can put your PhD program on pause for a summer, you are unfortunately
not eligible for GSOC (that's a pity, I know).

Looking forward to an exciting summer, hopefully with new collaborations!

Gaƫl
