Sorry for the late reply, but as you said, your request was a bit late.
We would expect possible students to be active in the project, that is
work on issues and submit pull-requests before
applying for a GSoC project. Also, an application should include a
review of the proposal by a mentor, for which there would have not been
time in your case.
