Just curious, would it be much work to support multiple line regex
matching, or would that require many code changes? I and several other
scintilla users would much appreciate it.
I think it is a lot of work. I can't recall all the details but do
remember that when implementing searching there were many
infinite-loop bugs in the regular expression code that took a lot of
work to fix. A major problem is in handling ^ and $ with the RE
library treating these as start of text / end of text rather than
start of line / end of line. There are also issues with allowing line
ends to be any of \r, \n, or \r\n.
If someone would have a lot of free time and he/she would like to
implement a new reg. exp. replacement for the old one. Would that be
accepted to the Scintilla codebase, assuming the author of the code
would be willing to give it? And what specification would you recommend
to be used in that work?
As the current version is not recommended to be used, I can't see how it
go worse.
