If anyone wants to think this through *thoroughly* and produce a patch that *optionally* avoids setting current directory,thus using absolute paths whenever possible then I'll include it. It will still have to allow setting the directory when running tools, so it would have to then return the current directory somewhere else 'safe'. The reason that it should be an option is that I can see some messy corner cases here like when using UNF style network paths or other strange device paths and would like to retain an escape route if these cause trouble.
