Works for me on Windows so it is probable that the properties files
are not being evaluated as you expect. Rather than commenting out
items in global properties, it is better to override them in user
properties. Then you can install a new version of SciTE, overwriting
your old copy of global properties while maintaining your preferences.
Perhaps you are using the single file version of SciTE, Sc1 which
bundles all the standard properties files up into the executable image
where you can't comment them out, only override them from another
properties file.

No, it's the "full install" on Windows, and I'm editing my
SciTEUser.properties file, not the global one. I'm not sure why it
doesn't work though.
Another thing that also works on Linux but not Windows is setting the
font to monospace by default when Scite opens. Windows always opens up
my files with a proportional font, something like Comic Sans perhaps.
