The usual way of assigning names to buffers (tabs) is to do the Save
As... this would not prevent you from continuing to work with the new
files - and now all your tabs would have names! :)

Is there something about the Save As that makes it unsatisfactory or
more work than your right-click activated script approach?

This is exactly what I am presently doing. But this is by compulsion and not by choice. With this scheme, I am forced to save a file which I am not interested in saving. And then go back to the concerned folder and delete it.
