  I don't think "default" is a great term either but it would be more
accurate.

Because i usually deal with different encodings, a behaviour I like in
text editors
 1) guess a bit when opening like the linux ''file'' command
...
So, you were perfectly correct from a technical point a view.

  Its a different perspective: I like to be able to organize things
once and then have everything follow those settings. Guessing leads to
less predictable behaviour since changing the content of a file may
lead to it next opening with a different encoding interpretation.
