Well, is it hard to have the autoindent logic ignore whitespace and comments while finding the end of the line?
Any particular rule is not difficult but this feature needs a reasonable set of rules. What you want to find is group of settings that can be easily set to match a language. Finding the minimal group helps people get it working since the more settings used, the more likely they'll make a mistake.
