There's a trade-off between efficiency and the hassles caused by
dependencies and I mostly favour problem avoidance.
That wasn't an either-or... my stated sizes are *for* the static
[runtime included] builds of SciTE.exe and SciLexer.dll (the "smallest
code" bit is just compiler stuff, not use-runtime-dll stuff).
For VS 2003 (using the .mak files) SciTE.exe is around 450K and
SciLexer.dll is 330K. Why is your SciTE.exe so small? Does Lua work?
