Yes, once I understood that "8-bit" meant UTF-8 (given my settings) and "UTF-8" means "UTF-8 with a BOM inserted" I simply stopped touching the encoding menu: then SciTE works fine for me :-). The character.set setting doesn't seem to be required for the linux version, but I'll give it a try if I hit any problems in future.
