I have *not* used any USB smartcard readers to date. But I have crashed
my SMP workstation when attempting to use a USB/serial adapter dongle.
I had done some reading and found some notes that some of the Linux USB
and/or USB->serial driver code may not be SMP-safe.
I haven't had a chance to debug further. For the record, I was using a
linux 2.4.x(8?) kernel on a Debian stable system and the Keyspan PDA
(US-19) USB->serial dongle.
I have had no such problems while using the same USB->serial dongle
hardware with a single CPU system.
You may want to try a UP kernel just for kicks.
good luck.
