Ok, here's the scoop...

Linux support has been discontinued for the GemXpresso RADIII 3.x kit -
at least for the time being.  The tech support guy was unclear but I got
the impression that they are trying to make it work for future versions.

They mentioned that I *should* be able to make it work with Linux since
it is all Java but I would have to hack around as Jean-Luc suggested. 
Of course I cannot extract the necessary files (jars etc) without a
Windows system.

So they overnighted me a copy of the GemXpresso RADIII 3.0 CD (older
version) that *does* have Linux and Solaris support.  I'm about to
install it now.  If I find time I may try to make the newest one work
some day.

So, if you plan to get this kit from Gemplus, be sure you press your
sales/technical contacts for a copy of the older software.
