One way to keep the 166 running would be to run a non-popular desktop manager like blackbox, it has a small foot print. Granted that Mozilla and openoffice are mem-hogs and may run much slower but at least with blackbox they will not be running in swap space. I've used it for my p200 laptop and it works well.
