I tend to avoid deploying ftp at all, in favor of a combination
of BitTorrent (I sent out 30GB of KNOPPIX's 2003-11-19 disk last
time I had it up!) and making my web server pull double duty.

That said, this document is getting a bit old, but provides
another vote for vsftpd as well as a good survey of what (at the
time it was written) was good and what was to be avoided, and
